The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
